Ashes Outside of Mass

February 22 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Liturgy Described: Receive Ashes in a short liturgy of prayers and scriptures (No Mass). This liturgy starts with a simple song followed by an invitation to repentance given by the priest. Everyone then kneels and prays together a psalm of repentance (Psalm 51), then stands for the Our Father and the blessing of the ashes. The people then come forward to receive ashes on their foreheads. The liturgy then closes with a prayer, blessing, and recessional hymn.

Receiving Ashes: Remember your mortality. Experience sorrow for sin. Learn about and partake of this ancient devotion. Not Catholic? No problem. Anyone is welcome to receive ashes and learn about entering into Lent, the season of repentance and renewal leading up to Easter.

Penance Requirements: Ash Wednesday is an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. This means that as a member of the Latin Church you are obligated to eat no more than one full meal and two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. This requirement does not apply if you have medical needs or you are younger than 18 or older than 59. Ash Wednesday is also a day of abstinence from meat, which is binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
