Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Confessions

Prepare for a Holy Lent with prayer, pancakes, confessions and libations. St. James will be supplying the pancakes and you are asked to bring sides (precooked sausage, bacon, fruits, pancake toppings, drinks, etc.). Fr. Mayer and Fr. Ernie will be ready to shrive you of your sins during this time to help you get ready for lent. This is our final feast and celebration before the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday! Evening Prayer
The night will begin at 5:30 PM with Vespers from Divine Worship: Daily Office, the poetic form of Evening Prayer unique to the Ordinariate. Come and experience and learn about the second greatest form of prayer in the Church, by-passed only by Holy Mass. This form of prayer can be traced back to the apostles and even further to our Jewish forefathers.

Confessions
Have your confession heard and your sins forgiven. Enjoy your pancakes or a play a game while you wait for the confessional to become available.

History of Shrove Tuesday
“Shrove” is Old English for being shriven of your sins. In other words, going to confession and getting your sins removed in preparation for a Holy Lent which begins the day after Shrove Tuesday. The old Shrove Tuesday tradition was empty your house of meat, dairy, eggs, and oil by removing them from your home in preparation for Lent. So, people emptied their pantries of these and made pancakes to enjoy their eggs and oils, then added the meats, cheeses, milk, and other dairies they would not have for the Lenten season. The old custom is to bless all these on Easter to celebrate their return.
